Anne Murray is arguably one of the most famous Canadian singers of all time. Well known for hit songs like, 'Snowbird', 'You Needed Me', 'Could I Have This Dance', and 'A Little Good News', Anne Murray music has always provided me with a sense of peace, hope and inspiration.
I was about nine years old when I bought by first Anne Murray album.
I was so proud -- I saved my allowance for weeks on end just to be able to own the record that featured Anne's number one hit at the time, You Needed Me.
Until that time, I was just following Anne Murray on the radio since nobody else in my family owned any of her music.
I was Flying On My Own as far as being able to build up a "Snowbird collection" if I wanted it.
Year after year, I made sure that the number one thing on any Christmas or birthday wish list was Anne's music. After all, by the time I was nine years old, she had already been recording for eight or nine years. I had some catching up to do!
I have enjoyed and loved all of Anne's songs throughout the years, but now that she is retired, I am a bit sad that the days of being able to purchase brand new Anne Murray music are probably over forever.
Still, what she has already provided to the world will likely be available for quite some time. The following tunes are some of my all-time favorite songs of Anne's. If you aren't familiar with them, this is your chance :)
'A Little Good News' is one of those songs where, although the lyrics are set to specific events in history, the underlying message remains the same, and is deeply relevant -- even today.
That is what makes a song timeless.
When I first heard this song as a teenager, I absolutely loved it. I loved the richness and urgency in Anne's voice.
I also found the main melody itself to be a bit ... haunting. But, I think that's whole the point.
As the song explains, with so many horrible headlines in today's news, it would be nice if papers suddenly had not much to print -- no terrible tragedies to report.
We can all use "a little good news" in our everyday lives!
'The Other Side' is a song that talks about the flip side to the darkness, fear and pain that we humans inevitably experience throughout our lives.
We have the power to discover new things, and to better ourselves if we just take that first step -- no matter how small.
The greatest risk is the one where were choose to go nowhere at all.
Anne has recorded two versions of this song. The first version, in 1996 (the one featured here), is my personal favorite.
Background vocals were provided by Canadian singers Jann Arden
and Dawn Langstroth.
The other version was recorded in 1999 for Anne's CD, What a Wonderful World. Dawn Langstroth sings back-up on this version as well.
'Let There Be Love' is a song that was written by Amy Sky, specifically for Anne and her daughter, Dawn Langstroth.
Dawn had been battling anorexia nervosa, and Amy wrote this as a tribute to the special mother-daughter bond that Anne and Dawn share.
The inspiring message is also an acknowledgement of the difficult times endured by the entire family during Dawn's struggle.
Let there be love, and let there be hope ...
The voice that you hear in this clip is actually Dawn's. This was her first professional solo debut, and she did an amazing job! She blends really well with her mother's voice, that's for sure.
