Anorexia nervosa effects on Mary-Kate Olsen were devastating. In one interview she states, "Anorexia almost killed me". One of the side effects of anorexia includes death, so it's likely that she was being serious when she said this. It was not a flippant remark.
For quite some time now Mary Kate Olsen's eating disorder has made headlines, even though several years have passed since she entered an eating disorder clinic. Anorexia recovery, plus distance built by time help one to put things in perspective.
Early on, Mary-Kate and her management denied -- or at least would not publicly acknowledge -- that she had anorexia. It is a very private matter, and the fact that it was not announced to the world is something that she cannot be criticized for.
These days Mary-Kate seems to be in a different place and she is speaking out a little more about her battle. This is a sure sign of how far she's come in her eating disorder recovery.
It does not mean that she is cured. I know for a fact that recovery from anorexia is a daily battle, even once you've completed treatment. And anorexia nervosa effects are difficult, if not impossible, to overcome.
Anorexia nervosa effects on your business (Dualstar for the Olsen's) and on family and health can have profound consequences. In Mary-Kate's case, it was a publicity nightmare when she showed up at an awards show wearing a dress that did nothing to hide her gaunt, emaciated figure.
Most people were genuinely concerned, but still, there were the usual vocal few who think that "just eat a sandwich" is the solution. It really is not that simple.
The Olsen family put their own lives on hold in order to pull together during this difficult time. It was reported that they participated in family counseling, and sister Ashley visited whenever it was possible.
Anorexia's effects on the body can be long-lasting, it not permanent. Studies have shown that the brain can shrink during starvation, but with re-feeding, it will re-build itself over time.... a long time It's not known if Mary-Kate suffered from this, but it's always a possibility.
Overall, she seems to be taking her career in a new direction - specifically requesting to no longer refer to her and her sister as The Olsen Twins, but instead to use their individual names. Definitely a reasonable request!
It seems like Mary-Kate is creating an identity that's all her own. This is another positive sign of personal growth and and indication that anorexia nervosa's effects are no longer going to rule her life.
