Anorexia nervosa treatment was a difficult process for Mary Kate Olsen. Her anorexia treatment consisted of experiential therapy at Cirque Lodge in Sundance Utah.
The treatment program lasted approximately six weeks, which is very similar to most eating disorder treatment programs.
It's customary for treatment centers to assess the length of stay on a case-by-case basis, but the minimum is typically 30 to 45 days.
In respect for Mary-Kate's privacy, not much has been said publicly about her anorexia nervosa treatment process, but you can be sure that it was no different that any other eating disorder therapy program.
The first week is the most difficult. It's extremely emotional because you've been torn away from family and friends and placed into a living environment with total strangers -- and you're not exactly feeling your best.
A lot of medical testing and psychological assessments are completed during the first week or two of treatment. At this point, it's usually just you and your individual therapist and physicians. You're not even participating in the full program yet, especially if you're going to be involved in experiential therapy.
You're probably wondering, What is experiential therapy?
At Cirque Lodge, where Mary-Kate Olsen received her anorexia nervosa treatment, it is a large part of their entire drug rehab and addiction program.
With regards to eating disorders, experiential therapy is quite different from individual psychotherapy. It allows anorexia sufferers to explore relationships and connections with others.
The staff at Cirque Lodge encouraged Mary-Kate to participate in various outdoor activities such as rope-climbing, hiking and horseback riding. Since Mary-Kate is a competitive equestrian, this was probably right up her alley!
Rope-climbing was something that I did at Remuda Ranch when I was there for my anorexia treatment. I can tell you from experience that challenge courses like this can help you to build confidence and learn to trust others. Simply put, the underlying message is -- if you fall, someone will be there to catch you.
When Mary-Kate completed her anorexia nervosa treatment at Cirque Lodge, she had to leave in the middle of the night in an attempt to avoid the paparazzi. She also did not go right home. Staying at a hotel close to home enabled Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen to reunite with each other in privacy.
After she was discharged, Mary-Kate continued with her eating disorder treatment program in the form of private therapy. This is highly recommended by eating disorder clinics because inpatient treatment is just the beginning, not the end. You build a foundation that starts with weight restoration and intensive therapy.
The skills you learn under the strict supervision of a treatment center will be built upon once you leave the facility. It takes a ton of dedication and hard work, but without these ingredients, the chances of relapse are quite high.
Thankfully, Mary-Kate Olsen seems to be doing quite well, and is even speaking out a little about her treatment experience. I wish her all the best!
