Anorexia news and photos of anorexia in the media can be a disturbing issue for anorexia sufferers. Not only that, but quite often the most reliable information on the serious implications of pro ana websites, or the physical effects of anorexia nervosa, rarely reaches the public.
Normally when you hear about anorexia news - or eating disorders in the media - the focus tends to be on the famous people, such as Fiona Apple anorexia, Calista Flockhart, or the Mary Kate Olsen anorexia "frenzy". Sadly, the list goes on.
When an anorexic celebrity is featured so prominently in the media, it can have a major impact on young women and girls.
But, I have to admit, that didn't happen in my case.
My issues with anorexia came from inside myself. I wasn't much influenced by celebrities with eating disorders, although I can totally understand how someone could be.
A lot of times children look up to these high-profile people as their role models, whether it's conciously or unconciously.
Anorexia news these days can be horrifying, but ... contrary to the negative aspects of eating disorders in the media, there is at least one positive thing that comes to my mind right away. That is - if it weren't for some of the more responsible media outlets, friends and family would have a harder time learning about eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.
It's important for the victim of an eating disorder to have the support of friends and family as she/he recovers, but it's almost equally important for the family to have some kind of support system as well.
Some eating disorder treatment centers, (actually all of them that I know of), have a few sessions with the family in the form of support groups.
You may even be able to find an eating disorder drop-in center in your local area that offers a "Friends and Family" support group.
When all is said and done, I think it's important to try as much as we can to filter what we see in the media that's disturbing, but at the same time, still allow ourselves to remain informed.
Keeping up with the latest anorexia news and updates - showing a genuine, caring interest - is one of the best ways that we can help and support our eating disorder victims.
