Anorexia Triggers - What Exactly Are They?
Be Aware Of These Top 5 Anorexia Triggers!

Anorexia triggers can be suggestions, images, or events that cause, or perpetuate, anorexic thoughts and behaviors. People often question the causes of eating disorders and what compels girls with anorexia (or males with eating disorders) to continue down the road of self starvation.

Anorexia triggers can be at least partially responsible for someone's eating disorder, and this results in the person engaging in harmful or unhealthy behaviors.

Anorexia Triggers - Girls With Anorexia

I would say that each individual (whether they have anorexia or not) has their own set(s) of stressors, so it's difficult to pin-point any one particular thing and say that it will definitely drive someone to anorexia nervosa.

I think we all have times where someone says something or does something that upsets us. In most cases people just deal with it and move on.

However, I've been told that anorexic people tend to be highly sensitive and caring.

As a result, you may find that the anorexia sufferer is extremely affected by others' actions and the words they say.

In my case, considering the difficulty I had in dealing with the magnitude of my own emotions, if a comment, look or gesture sparked any emotion in me at all, I would immediately numb it out.

This is NOT a conscious choice. It happens quickly and automatically.

To "numb out" for me, simply meant not eating. If I didn't eat, I wouldn't have to feel. It sounds crazy, but it's real - and extremely complicated.

What Are The Top 5 Anorexia Triggers?

Anorexia triggers will vary from person to person, but here are five fairly common issues that I've taken from my own personal experience, and the experiences of other people that I know:

  1. Emotional issues - Not eating is a way to cope with painful or distressing emotions (anger, sadness, frustration)

  2. Weight Comments - "You look much better now", "How's your weight been?"

  3. Images - Skinny people, pictures of food

  4. Eating with others - In my case, eating with other people made me feel like a pig. No matter what was on my plate, it always seemed like ten times as much as what everyone else had to eat.

  5. Exercise promotion - How often have you heard that diet and exercise go hand-in-hand? For some folks, exercise sets the wheel of anorexia in motion. In this case, it's usually called a "diet". A good number of people can handle this combination of healthy behavior in moderation, but for those with eating disorders, it's a difficult - if not impossible - balance.

What Is 'Pro Ana' - 'Pro Mia'? - More Anorexia Triggers

The terms pro ana and pro mia refer to web sites that promote and trigger eating disorders. These sites usually condone self starvation and/or excessive exercise.

They are highly controversial. Read more about the rise in the presence of Pro Ana Websites.
