How to be anorexic is what more and more young people these days are searching for on the internet. Society is obsessed with thinness, but learning how to get anorexia is taking it just a little too far. Do people really understand the dangers of eating disorders?
I've seen message boards where young girls and teenagers visit an eating disorder forum and specifically ask how they can act like an anorexic. What the heck is that all about?
Whenever I've noticed an age mentioned, these girls are usually between 11 and 17 years old. So very sad. I'm not sure exactly what's going through their heads, but it's clear that they don't have an in-depth concept about the dangers of anorexia, or even what it really is.
On the surface it appears as though these girls are using a tragic, genuine illness as a way to diet and lose weight. To them anorexia is synonymous with "dieting".
I know that this is the way an eating disorder sometimes begins, but as I mentioned, those are just the outward appearances and outward actions that we're seeing. What's really going on inside their heads?
Sometimes young ladies say they want to know how to be anorexic because the "skinny girls get the guys". I think of this as kind of an indirect peer pressure.
They see other girls, who may happen to be thinner than they are, getting asked on dates, but it doesn't happen to them. They immediately assume that it's because of their weight.
The deeper issue is the personalization of these events. They are over interpreting others' behaviors as directly relating to themselves. These types of cognitive distortions can be present in those who might be prone to developing an eating disorder.
It's also common for high schoolers to make pacts with each other to cut out junk food, cut out trips to fast food restaurants, and participate in contests to see who can lose the most weight the fastest.
While there's nothing wrong with wanting to eat healthy and limit junk food or fast food, it just needs to be done in moderation and not taken to extremes. Allow yourself that cheeseburger once in a while!
