Livedo Reticularis - What Causes It?
How Is It Related To Anorexia Nervosa?

Livedo Reticularis gets its name from the Latin word livere, which means "bluish".

It has many causes, and since it's a vascular condition, it is possible to see it in patients suffering from anorexia nervosa. This is because eating disorders such as anorexia are known to cause circulatory and vascular complications.

Livedo Reticularis Mottled Skin In Livedo Reticularis

As you can see in the photo to the right, the mottled skin discolorations in livedo reticularis appear in a bluish, purplish pattern.

This is caused by the swelling of the medium veins, which makes them more visible.

Although this disease is associated with many different conditions, it can also be a normal occurance that requires no treatment, or it is sometimes a side effect of certain medications.

Livedo reticularis tends to appear most often in the lower extremities, but it can be present in the arms as well.

As far as I know, this condition is not painful, but some people may notice it more when they get cold because this makes the discolorations even more pronounced.

Bottom line: if you have pain, discomfort, doubts or concerns, get to a physician for proper diagnosis.
