Mary-Kate Olsen 's eating disorder recovery has been going on for a few years now, and you might be wondering how this half of the Olsen Twins has been coping. Does she show any signs of anorexia?
Recovering from anorexia is a very private matter, so it's no wonder that Mary-Kate Olsen has kept pretty quiet about it. When she was discharged from Cirque Lodge after her treatment ended, it was just before the school year was about to begin.
Many people worried that she may have been taking on too much too soon, but it seems as though Mary-Kate had plans to get on with her life, which -- thankfully -- included a commitment to recovery.
In 2008, she admitted in The Cut: New York Magazine's Fashion Blog that the hardest part of any problem, regardless of what it may be, is the act of asking for help, reaching out, and being honest with yourself about your strengths, weaknesses and everything else in your life.
By starting college just a short time after her discharge from anorexia nervosa treatment, she was making a pretty strong statement about moving on. It doesn't mean that she was "cured" or "all better" or less dedicated to her recovery process.
Recovering from anorexia can take on many forms, and it can also take a very long time. Mary-Kate Olsen was prepared. She had lined up therapists on both coasts - New York and L. A. - and kept her promise to develop a strong support system, and continue on with eating disorder therapy as an outpatient.
"Life after eating disorder recovery" is an ominous statement for just about every anorexic, not just Mary-Kate Olsen. In fact, it seems to bring on more questions than answers. What does recovery mean? What does it look like? How do you know if or when you've recovered?
I believe that "recovery" can mean different things for different people. From some, they feel as though they're cured and never have to think about it much anymore.
For others, it can remain an issue for the rest of their lives, but with proper support and treatment, it becomes more manageable. I think of it almost like diabetes. You aren't cured, you have some challenges and health risks, but for the most part, you are out of the "danger zone".
It's difficult to know how Mary-Kate feels about her difficult journey. It's obvious that she's smiling more, and seems to have a new friends, and a direction for her image. She recently asked that people not refer to her and Ashley as The Olsen Twins, but instead to refer to them as individuals.
I see this as a huge step for Mary-Kate Olsen 's eating disorder recovery. To me, this is evidence that she is finding out who she really is, and making an effort to develop her own identity -- which has got to be difficult when you're a twin, and have been publicly promoted that way since before you could walk.
