Symptoms of anorexia nervosa in Mary-Kate Olsen eventually became difficult to hide. People with eating disorders come from all walks of life. These are some factors that may have contributed to Mary Kate's eating disorder.
The first time any of us became aware of the fact that Mary-Kate might have an eating disorder was during the presentation of her (and sister Ashley's) star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.
Mary-Kate wore a halter type dress that revealed just how thin she really was. The bones that showed through her skin created quite the media commotion and concern for her health.
Obviously, extreme thinness or emaciation is one of the symptoms of anorexia nervosa, but what other signs were there that Mary-Kate was developing an eating disorder?
Were her friends and family aware that something was wrong? The truth is, we might never know the answers to these questions. However, there are some very common anorexia symptoms that most people with the eating disorder tend to display.
Stressful jobs can definitely trigger symptoms of anorexia nervosa. How? Well, a person (or two) can only do so much -- and it's no secret that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have a lot on the go.
Let's face it -- the Olsen Twins haven't stopped working since they were 9 months old. They not only have their acting careers, but they also run a multi-million-dollar empire, for which they took on even more responsibilities when they turned 18 and became of legal age.
Mary-Kate said, "There have definitely been times in my life when I just turned to people and said, 'I'm done - this is too much for me. This is too over-whelming.’" - From HollywoodScoop.com - February 3, 2008
It's one thing to be stressed, but how does that present itself as one of the symptoms of anorexia nervosa? The easy answer is that most people with anorexia are very good at hiding their feelings and making it look like everything is fine.
Mary-Kate was probably stressed beyond belief, but would not allow herself to show it. She possibly could have used her eating disorder as a way of coping with the stress, or "numbing out" to her emotions.
Some folks believe that showing emotions is a sign of weakness. Even if that's true (and I don't believe it is), there's a price to be paid for pent-up emotions that are never allowed to surface.
Sometimes we know that the price has been paid when we see signs and symptoms of anorexia nervosa. Anorexics like it when their world appears to be perfect - and perfectly controlled.
If they were to show that they're upset, frustrated or hurting, it would turn their world upside down. They would see themselves as a failure for "rocking the boat" or "upsetting the applecart". For this reason, they keep a lot of things bottled up. Anorexia can be a lot about secrecy.
It's interesting that whenever I've seen Mary-Kate Olsen, she always appears very happy, and "together". This is typical of most anorexics.
It's true that everyone displays symptoms of anorexia nervosa differently, but based on personal experience with this illness, it's fairly easy for me to imagine what she must have been going through emotionally.
