What causes anorexia in child stars? For Mary Kate Olsen, the stress of fame may have caused her eating disorder, but it's very dangerous to speculate. Here's why:
The reality is that Mary Kate's anorexia could have been caused by any number of situations, emotions, relationships or any combination thereof. It's nearly impossible to pinpoint the exact causes of eating disorders -- nor is it particularly helpful to try to do so.
Mary Kate has admitted that it was extremely difficult to grow up in the public eye. Let's face it, the Olsen twins have been in front of a camera since they were nine months old. That's pretty much their entire lives!
In one interview they said that while playing Full House's "Michelle" they felt like puppets. I would imagine this is because they were so incredibly young, and not able to voice their feelings or concerns about anything.
They just did what they were told. Stage hands placed them on their marks, their words were scripted. I can completely understand how they might feel like "puppets".
Most of us wonder what causes anorexia when we see an overly thin celebrity. Somehow our minds just go there. Nevertheless, in addition to growing up in adult world, surrounded by entertainment gossip, Mary-Kate Olsen probably felt the pressure to be thin from a very early age.
Imagine -- you're just a kid, working with adults day in and day out -- no kindergarten play there. Then you have the media and publicity where your every move and every look is scrutinized.
Sometimes they say you're too fat. Other days they call you "anorexic". The bottom line is, when you live in the public eye, you can't win.
Adults have the ability to understand the concept that you can't please everybody all the time. Children have a harder time with that. Perhaps this frustration was one of the contributing factors to Mary-Kate Olsen's anorexia.
There are also many emotional causes of anorexia and we really don't know what personal issues she may have been dealing with.
However, one thing is for sure -- We know that eating disorders are caused by a complicated combination of situations, unresolved emotions and a need to control them all.
